Why Government Agencies Need to Consider AI into Their Future Strategy
The recent COVID-19 Pandemic has disrupted just about every aspect of everyday life and this is especially true for private-sector businesses. Work from home requirements, shelter in place orders and the myriad of other actions that federal, state and local governments have ordered are all being done in the interest of public safety.
But what about the public sector? How are they going to respond to an influx of new demands/requests created by the fallout of these necessary but disruptive actions? These includes processing new unemployment benefits, administering the review and granting of loans, identifying and ferreting out fraud, all the while continuing to keep the “normal business” of issuing permits, licenses, tax collection, garbage collection running.
We believe a large portion of the day-to-day work can be automated using the following technologies:
- Documents can be “read” by computers and routed to the appropriate department. In addition, based upon the document type, an automated look-up script could be run to verify information in the document.
- Tedious clicks done by employees while searching for information can be automated using Robotic Process Automation (RPA) which is a technology that saves millions of hours a year.
- Applications for benefits can be reviewed and scored for the probability that they will be awarded, denied or possibly fraudulent and presented to human specialists for final review.
These are just a couple of examples of how the public sector can begin to automate much of their work that supports their core functions of government.
We’ve seen first hand how implementing AI and Machine Learning best practices within an department can future proof the entire organization. Automation is essential, even more so in times of economic uncertainty. At NLP Logix we always say, “We can automate that.”
